Winterisation - For Peace of Mind

Good pool maintenance throughout the year is essential.  A neglected pool is expensive to repair and winter is the time when poor maintenance can lead to burst pipes, heaters and filters.

Winterisation is the process of preparing your swimming pool for the winter months when the pool is inactive.  This is essential to guard against frost.   Once your pool has been winterised the level of regular maintenance required is greatly reduced. However, it's important to remember that algae does continue to grow during the winter months. Therefore, it remains necessary to treat the water until the  outside temperature drops to about 7 degrees C or 42 degrees F.

Swimming pools should not be left without water in the winter months as the pool shell will be at risk from frost attack on the internal surfaces.  In addition, an empty pool in general is more dangerous.

Once you decide on a date to close down your pool, the next stage is to decide how the equipment is to be left during the winter.  There are two alternatives -

1.  Run the filter pump only for two to three hours per day.  This can be done if the plant room can be fully protected against frost.  This will mean that the filter will have to be serviced on a monthly basis during the winter and you will use some electricity.  However, commissioning the pool at the beginning of the next season will be a much easier process.

2.  Drain the filtration and heating equipment of water and store the pumps in a warm environment.
