Green Issues

A greener lifestyle – Yes, you CAN lessen the environmental impact of your pool.

Outdoor pools are more affordable than ever before and eco-friendly equipment has dramatically cut running costs. The increasing social focus on sustainability has inspired a range of new products and practices. Many of these can help to reduce the running cost of your swimming pool while also diminishing the impact on the environment. The one major green step you can take is to install a swimming pool cover.

Energy consumption and associated costs can be minimised by installing fully automatic pool covers, high efficiency pool heaters, pumps and other equipment. Furthermore, the use of an outdoor pool is no longer limited to the height of summer. Heat retaining covers used in combination with modern heating systems can effectively extend the swimming pool season from April through to October.

There are even bigger changes you can make to your pool to save water, reduce chemicals, and minimise fuel costs.

Blow away the chemical blues…

Conventional chlorine sanitisation systems don’t have to be the only answer. One of the most fashionable innovations is the use of salt to treat the water rather than chlorine. It is cheaper, less of an irritant, almost without aroma and more environmentally friendly. Salt water pools also have slightly lower evaporation rates. Other alternatives to chlorine include copper ionization and oxygen systems and ultraviolet (UV) sanitization systems.

Neptune’s engineers can advise on all these systems.

You could even consider reducing your pool’s water temperature. Lower energy use will reduce your carbon footprint and help cut your costs.

Introducing the Aligator

This nifty little product is a water purification system which helps cut down the use of chlorine and other chemicals. The Alligator works by harmlessly charging ions in the water. This creates a residual disinfectant/algaecide throughout the whole pool which negates the need for algaecide or clarifiers. Once the size of the pool has been entered, the computer continuously monitors the condition of the electrodes and the pool water; it will alert the user through a flashing red light and an audio alarm.

The Aligator can offer considerable savings over conventional chemical sanitisation.
